Snow loads causing concerns

In many areas of the county, significant snow accumulations are pushing the snow loads on some structures to a failure point. In light of recent heavy snows and accumulating moisture we have begun to receive some reports of structural failures, including the roof on the former plywood plant at the Industrial Park, we understand.
"Obviously structural integrity varies from building to building so there is no perfect trigger point as to when or if you should remove the snow from your structure," said County Emergency Management Specialist, Marc McGill.
In a VERY unofficial and un-scientific process, McGill removed a one square foot section of snow where the undisturbed snow depth measured 28". He shoveled the snow into two 5-gallon buckets and the combined weight, including the plastic buckets was 29 pounds, thus giving a very approximate estimate that in that particular area (Libby City Hall lawn area), the snow load was 29 pounds per square foot. As McGill said, snow loading capacities vary greatly from building to building.
"This information is intended to be a guide to help you monitor or decide if you need to remove snow from your structures. If you have questions, I suggest you contact your local building inspector or structural engineering firm. A call to your insurance agent may provide you with additional information as well," he said.
Many of you will recall the winter of '96 and the collapsed structures associated with those snow loads. We need to make sure that those scenarios don't recur. Be aware and BE SAFE. Shoveling snow from a roof is a dangerous thing to do. If you are uncomfortable doing it, hire help.
