Eighth-graders at Libby Middle School collected nearly 4,000 non-perishable food items for the Libby Food Pantry during a recent Civil War regiment competition.
Students in the six regiments – 20th Maine, 57th Virginia, 24th Michigan, 15th Alabama, 26th North Carolina, and 69th Pennsylvania – started bringing in a few cans from home. As the competition grew, the students began to find more creative ways to collect food, including going door-to-door and asking for donations from customers at the grocery store.
In the end, they collected an average of 33 items per student, with enough cans to allow an additional competition to see which regiment could build the best structure with all its cans.
Regimental leaders were in charge of organizing their units for can collection and building the structures. The structures were built during a two-hour period. Regiments also competed for points in the areas of most cans, most creative structure, most colorful, best team cooperation and best written paragraph. Their paragraph needed to describe the structure and how they came up with the idea.
Starting as a competition, the students have realized that there were no losers in the battle. As a team of North and South, they gathered one of the largest amounts of cans ever collected by one organization for the Libby Food Pantry, a total of 3,876 items of non-perishable food.
“This experience has surpassed all expectations,” said teacher Leslie Crooks, advisor for the eighth-grade student input committee. “All of us believe that what this group of eighth-graders accomplished, in such a short time, is only a sign of what they can accomplish individually and together in the future.”
