Ineligible player causes Logger game forfeiture
MHSA orders forfeiture of two Libby High School football games
September 10, 2007
The Libby Loggers have been ordered to forfeit two football games because an ineligible freshman was allowed to play.
A transfer freshman to Libby High School was actually a second year freshman and was enrolled incorrectly.
It was later discovered that he had taken high school level classes the previous year, but had not passed enough classes to be considered a sophomore, and enrolled as a freshman.
The Montana High School Association Executive Director, Mark Beckman, ordered the forfeiture of the 28-27 Frosh game against Troy, and the 53-20 Logger win against Kellogg, Idaho.
"We respectfully understand Mr. Beckman's decision in forfeiting the games", said Logger Assistant Principal and Activities Director, Jim Germany. "It is important for him to reinforce the 'letter of the law' when it comes to the rules and procedures. We will abide by his decision," said Germany.
However, the Libby High School plans to appeal the decision to the Montana High School Association board at their September 24th meeting.
"It is our belief," said Germany, "Libby High School has not acted in a negligent manner. This was simply an unfortunate event that was unavoidable with our current enrollment practices. We feel strongly that the intent of the rule has not been violated."
Libby High reported the infraction themselves. The player's name has not been released.
