The employees at St. John’s Hospital are encouraging local students to pursue degrees in the field of medicine. Nine years ago a group of employees devised a plan to raise funds for local students that were pursuing medical careers. The employees involved the entire hospital in their quest and started the SJLH Medical Scholarship Fund. According to Susan Horelick, of the SJLH Scholarship Committee, 27 students from our area have benefited from over $11,400.00 in scholarship funds over the past 9 years.

“The employees at St. John’s do so much more than just provide medical services to the community,” commented Horelick. “They raise funds for all types of health related organizations and give freely of their time and talents in a number of groups and organizations. We are 214 employees strong and want to make a difference. The scholarship fund is just one way we can accomplish that.”

In 2007, the hospital administration challenged the employees to raise even more money for scholarships by matching dollar for dollar up to $1,500.00. The match allowed more students to benefit from the Scholarship Program than ever before, added Horelick.

The recipients of the 2007 scholarship awards are Shay Miller of Libby, who plans on pursuing a career as a chemical analyst/pharmacist; Katherine Nelson of Troy, who is looking at a career in nursing; Amanda Nelson and Abby Gallegos of Eureka, who have both chosen to major in pre-medical science; Kylie Schauss of Libby who will be pursuing a career as a Dental Assistant, and Jordan Livingston of Eureka, who is seeking a career in the chiropractic field. For more information about the SJLH Medical Scholarship fund call Susan Horelick at 293-0164.
