SJLH Medical Staff VP urges Public Health Emergency
Asbestosis victims should receive needed health care
August 9, 2007
Medical Staff Vice President at St John's Hospital, in a letter to Steven Johnson, Administrator of the EPA, is urging the declaration of a Public Health Emergency.
In the letter, presented to Johnson during his visit to Libby, Dr. Jana Hall said "It is imperative the resources be made available so those affected by asbestosis receive the screening and healthcare services they need." Hall said the only viable alternative that assures such services are properly funded is the creation of a Medical Trust fund, governed at the local level.
Hall went on to say, "It is essential the necessary resources be allocated so required toxicity studies can be completed without compromising any clean-up activity."
Hall raised an issue many of us have been pointing out. The current expenditures of the EPA clean-up efforts have a significant positive impact on the local economy, but what happens when the EPA leaves? Hall says the "sudden loss of these expenditures will cripple this community." "The resources necessary to begin aggressively investing in local economic development activities must begin without delay," Hall told Johnson.
