Wolf injures domestic calf in Pleasant Valley
2nd depredation incident in the county in June; by wolves in different packs
July 10, 2007
In late June a wolf injured a domestic calf in the northwest Pleasant Valley area of northwest Montana between Kalispell and Libby. USDA Wildlife Services, who have the responsibility for livestock protection, confirmed the depredation.
According to Kent Laudon, FWP’s Region One Wolf Specialist, the event occurred within the Wolf Prairie Pack’s territory. Laudon believes that this pack is made up of only three wolves, each 2-1/2 years old. The three young wolves are believed to be siblings.
According to Laudon, this is the first confirmed depredation by this pack this year, so no wolf removals are planned at this time. However, FWP will closely monitor the situation.
