There were 59 entries for this year's Rendezvous, fewer than expected due to the cancellation of muzzle shooting events because of fire danger. Though the Rendezvous was smaller than in recent years, the camp atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, with plenty of socializing all around.

The Kootenai Muzzleloaders will be hosting their annual Two Rivers Rendezvous this weekend, July 20-22. This annual event brings together modern day mountain men and women for a weekend of camaraderie with other like-minded individuals. Authentic clothing and equipment of the 1800’s Rocky Mountain west will be featured.

The Kootenai Muzzleloaders formed in the spring of 1995 by a handful of black powder enthusiasts. Several of the founding members are still actively involved with the group, including Mark Morain, Larry “Smitty” Smith, Dan Murray, Bob Kamena, Tim and Beth Kumle, and Dave Windom. There are currently about thirty members. Officers for 2007 are Lenny Pauley, president; Bill Turner, vice-president; and Emily Pauley, secretary/treasurer.

The Muzzleloaders held the first Rendezvous in 1996, making 2007 the 12th annual event. There were about 25 participants during that first gathering, and 2007 should bring about 200 people from eight states and two provinces.

In addition to the Two Rivers Rendezvous, the Kootenai Muzzleloaders also host a spring shoot in March at Fawn Creek Campground near Libby. There are monthly shoots during the winter and an occasional Dutch oven cookout. The Muzzleloaders also participate in community events such as the Irish Fair, the Heritage Museum opening, Troy’s 4th of July celebration, and Logger Days; as well as various educational opportunities with local 4-H groups, hunter’s safety, and others.

Although this year’s muzzle shooting events have been cancelled due to the very high fire danger, there will still be plenty to see and do at the Rendezvous. For a step back in time, make a trip to Fawn Creek Campground this weekend to see the mountain men in action.

DIRECTIONS: From Libby, go north on Highway 37 for 14 miles. Just after crossing the Fisher/Kootenai River bridge, take a right and continue for another 8 miles. Watch for the Fawn Creek Campground sign on your right. Enter the gate and follow your nose!

For more information about the Rendezvous, see Two Rivers Rendezvous or contact Lenny Pauley at 406-293-9798 or Mark Morain at 406-293-8239.
