Wolf kills calf near Eureka
No wolf removals planned
June 20, 2007
On Saturday June 15, 2007 a wolf killed a domestic calf in the Pinkham Creek drainage of northwest Montana near Eureka. A Wildlife Services field agent confirmed the depredation on Monday.
According to Kent Laudon, FWP’s Region One Wolf Specialist, the event occurred within the Lydia wolf pack territory. This pack was identified last year by Laudon and his team as a new breeding pack. Last week, Laudon and his team captured and collared a subadult 85-pound yearling female wolf from this new pack. This collar will help FWP more closely monitor the pack’s activities. Since last year this pack has been a high priority to follow because it is within an existing grazing allotment on federal land. According to FWP Wildlife Manager Jim Williams, this is the first confirmed depredation by this pack. Because this is the first depredation attributed to the Lydia Pack, no wolf removals are planned at this time. However, FWP will conduct some on-site hazing to move the pack out of the grazing allotment.
