City votes to match $5000 for Libby Eagle Arch
Libby Mainstreet Program beautification project
June 6, 2007

The City of Libby, over Councilman Stu Crismore's objection, has joined the Lincoln County Commissioners by providing a matching $5,000 for the construction of an eagle arch over the south portal of Mineral Avenue into downtown Libby.

Crismore's objection was one of procedure.

The project, being promoted by Commissioner Rita Windom, artist Todd Berget, and downtown property owner Trent Oelberg, will span Mineral Avenue some 60 feet from Highway 2.

The arch will be about 18-feet high, and sport a 26-foot wide metal eagle sculpture.

Of the projected near $30,000 dollar cost, the group has raised around $16,000 in grants, and donations, not including in-kind services donated by local businesses.

Libby Mainstreet Program hopes to have the arch in place by July 4th.

Oelberg further requested the City provide funding in the ‘08 budget for the Libby Main Street Program, the successor to the now defunct Libby Revitalization. The request is for $20,000. The Council will look at that request during up coming budget meetings. Libby Revitalization was funded at $300,000 over three years.

City water users will have an extra thousand gallons of water to irrigate with over the summer. The City Council has increased the basic water usage allowance from 3000 gallons to 4000 for residences, and from 8000 gallons for commercial customers to 9000 gallons for June, July and August.

The Council is hoping the increase will encourage more residents to "green" up their lawns over the summer for tourist impact.
