May 25, 2007
The U.S. Congress passed an Iraq war funding bill Thursday evening around 8:45 pm.
Attached to the legislation are provisions funding the extension of the Secure Rural Schools and Communities Self-Determination Act for one year.
It will put $14 million into Montana counties to compensate those counties for lost tax-revenues from federally-owned land in those counties, such as the Kootenai National Forest in Lincoln County. $5.8 million dollars has come to Lincoln County in the past.
U.S. Senator Max Baucus (D) said he will continue to work to get a longer term extension of the Secure Rural Schools and Communities Self-Determination Act.
The Iraq war funding bill is on its way to the Oval Office. The President is expected to sign it.
