2 Grizzlies killed by train near Whitefish
April 10, 2007

Two young male grizzlies were hit and killed by a train early Monday morning about a mile north of Whitefish. The collision occurred along Whitefish Lake on the railroad tracks below Lion Mountain. Montana Fish Wildlife & Park’s (FWP) Grizzly Bear Management Specialist Tim Manley said that the bears likely died on impact.

Burlington Northern Sante Fe Officials reported the incident to FWP. Manley met train workers near Whitefish and collected the bears for necropsy. The bears will be sent to the FWP Wildlife Laboratory in Bozeman for examination. The 2-year old, 185-pound grizzlies, probably siblings, appeared to have been in good condition.
