Fire restrictions lifted
September 14, 2006

Stage I Fire Restrictions were lifted as of noon September 14 for the Northwest Montana Area due to cooler temperatures and recent moisture.

This includes all lands administered by the Kootenai National Forest. Also included are the Great Bear Wilderness and those portions of the Bob Marshall and Scapegoat Wildernesses on the Flathead, Lolo and Helena National Forests.

Restrictions have been lifted within Flathead and Lincoln Counties, plus that portion of Lake County outside the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Lands, Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park. These administrative boundaries include portions of Sanders County, west of Whitepine, Glacier, Missoula and Powell Counties.

Everyone, specifically hunters headed to the backcountry, are reminded that caution should be used with any and all fire. All campfires should be DEAD OUT prior to departing the campsite. Safe practices should be also be used when smoking cigarettes or pipes. Hunters and anyone traveling into the backcountry are encouraged to contact the respective land management office for updated information about fire activity and access restrictions.

Area fire managers will continue to monitor conditions, and may reinstate fire restrictions if needed. Anyone causing a wildfire can be held financially responsible for damages and the cost of putting out that fire.
