St. John’s employees give medical scholarships
St. John's Lutheran Hospital in Libby
August 18, 2006
The employees at St. John’s Hospital are encouraging local students to pursue degrees in the field of medicine.
Eight years ago a group of employees devised a plan to raise funds for local students that were pursuing medical careers. The employees involved the entire hospital in their quest and hence started the SJLH Medical Scholarship Fund.
According to Ann Brothers of the SJLH Scholarship Committee, 21 students from our area have benefited from over $8,900.00 in scholarship funds over the past 8 years. “The employees at St. John’s do so much more than just provide medical services to the community,” commented Brothers. “They raise funds for all types of health related organizations and give freely of their time and talents in a number of groups and organizations. We are 175 employees strong and want to make a difference. The scholarship fund is just one way we can accomplish that.” In 2007 the hospital administration will challenge the employees to raise even more money for scholarships by offering a $1,500.00 match. If the employees accomplish this task, we can help even more students actualize their dreams of a career in medicine, added Brothers. The recipients of the 2006 scholarship awards are Jennifer McCully and Tina McLinden of Libby. Jennifer will be attending the Carroll College focusing her curriculum in Pre-Med and Tina will be attending the Salish Kootenai College majoring in Pediatric Nursing.
