Wildfire season has begun on Kootenai
Warex fire started by lightning 25 miles south of Eureka
July 5, 2006
A wildfire was reported Tuesday morning on the Kootenai National Forest, as a 5-acre fire apparently started by lightning near Rocky Gorge campground between Libby and Eureka. Forest Service spokesman, Chris Fox in Eureka, tells KLCB News the fire was at 40 acres Wednesday morning.
The Forest Service has two hand teams from the Kootenai National Forest on the ground, one 20 members, one 10, in addition to two choppers, and an aerial tanker, which has made three runs. The tanker is based out of Medford, Oregon, reloading at Kalispell. A "hot shot" team has been called in.
The location of the "Warex" fire is about 25 south of Eureka. This is the only known fire spawned by the weekend thunderstorm's lashing of the area.
