Heritage Museum Opening
by Maggie Craig
June 3, 2006
The Heritage Museum opened for the season on Saturday with an outstanding display of historical items. Equipment used in mining, logging, and farming from the early 1900's was on hand and operating for demonstrations. A gold panning area was set up so visitors could pan for gold. The Kootenai Muzzleloaders had a display of the fur trade era. Kaya Hardgrove was in character and period dress as a child of 1895. The Model T was available for rides, and the 1946 Buffalo fire truck and Hyster lumber carrier were on display. Entertainment, including music and presentations, was provided inside the museum. The National Guard also paid a visit in one of their helicopters and a 5-ton truck, offering visitors a look at both. The cookhouse, itself a Forest Service cook shack from Sylvanite, was open and keeping everyone fed. The weather was even cooperative, holding off with the rain for the day (but pouring the next).
It was a great opening day for the museum, which is operated by volunteers through the summer. The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Be sure to visit the Smithsonian's traveling exhibit, "Key Ingredients: America by Food," which will be hosted by the museum July 16 through August 26.
