Osteoporosis program May 11
St. John's Lutheran Hospital
May 5, 2006

The public is invited to attend a program on how to prevent and treat osteoporosis on Thursday, May 11th, sponsored by St. John’s Lutheran Hospital. Dr. Roger J. Diegel, who practices Rheumatology in the Kalispell area, has lectured on osteoporosis at hospitals and clinics across the country. The program is being presented as a part of National Hospital Week.

Osteoporosis is low bone mineral density, an actual thinning of the bone’s density from the inside out. It can lead to a high risk of bone fracture, loss of mobility and chronic pain. Early prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is of particular interest to women, who have the highest risk of bone fracture from lost bone density as they age.

The program is free and will be held at the St. John’s Conference Center in Libby at 7 pm. The presentation is sponsored by St. John’s Lutheran Hospital with funding support from Proctor and Gamble Pharmaceuticals. Refreshments will be served.

It’s never too early to start preventing Osteoporosis; most bone mass is built in the first 30 years of life. While not all of the causes of osteoporosis are known, there are certain identified risk factors, and there are actions you can take to minimize your losses. Through maintaining a healthy diet high in calcium and getting regular weight bearing exercise, you can “bank” bone density mass when you are younger against expected loss as you age.
