St. John's Hospital celebrates the babies born in 2005

As part of their 2006 Hospital Week Celebration, St. John’s Lutheran Hospital hosted a special party to celebrate all of the babies who where born at St. John’s in 2005. Over 40 moms, dads, grandparents, siblings and friends celebrated with the recent arrivals.

According to KC Hoyer, Manager of Marketing at St. John’s, the party was part of an on-going effort by the hospital to give back to the community, and to stay in contact with those who choose St. John’s for their healthcare services. "Because of our size, we have the unique opportunity to become involved with our patients beyond the hospital doors," said Hoyer.

The Hospital Week birthday party was designed to encourage the new moms and dads to develop relationships with other parents that were going through the same things at the same time. "Our care doesn’t stop after our new parents leave the hospital," added Jackie Hare, VP of Nursing at St. John’s. "We understand the pressures that new parents face, and thought that teaming them up with other new parents –who were experiencing the same things—would make the transition to parenthood less stressful."

Ninety-four babies were delivered at St. John’s in 2005. In 2002, the Obstetrics Department –which houses one main birthing suite, complete with a Jacuzzi Tub for alternative comfort management, and two additional birthing rooms— was completely remodeled, and with the help of the hospital employees and businesses throughout the community the rooms were transformed into cozy suites with homelike furnishing and accessories. The department is equipped with the latest maternal/fetal monitoring equipment, two specialized birth-positioning beds, and a variety of equipment for alternative birthing methods, like the birthing ball.

In addition to comfortable surroundings and state-of-the-art equipment, the Obstetric Department also provides a specialized staff to assist during labor, delivery and follow-up care. Five St. John’s nurses have extensive obstetric practice and procedure training, two of whom are nationally certified Obstetrical Nurses. These trained professionals, along with a physician and a respiratory therapist are present at each birth.

The hospital also offers free prenatal classes to help the new parents prepare for the birth of their child.

"We are very proud of our Obstetric Department and related programs," said Hare. "We have worked for years to build a comprehensive program that new parents can rely on, and we are seeing an increase in the number of moms choosing to stay close to home to give birth. Our program takes the new parents through the entire pregnancy and beyond. We prepare them with free pre-natal classes, we assist them through labor and delivery, teach them infant CPR and offer postpartum and infant education, and then we follow-up a year later to celebrate the birth of their child once again. It’s a program the hospital and community can be very proud of."
