3.9 Magnitude earthquake hits Eureka area

The USGS National Earthquake Information Center reported a 3.9 magnitude earthquake in the northwest Montana area on Wednesday morning, March 22. The quake was centered about 12 miles west of Eureka and six miles west of Rexford, near the Canadian border. The tremor was reportedly felt in Eureka, Yaak Valley and Libby.
According to the USGS, Montana is one of the most seismically active states in the United States, however quakes are not commonly felt by residents. Most of Montana’s earthquake activity is concentrated in the mountainous western third of the state.
