USFWS calls for high Libby Dam flows for sturgeon
February 25, 2006
According to an article in The Columbia Basin Fish & Wildlife News Bulletin on February 24th, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is calling for spring flows to exceed Libby Dam’s powerhouse capacity in order to help endangered Kootenai River white sturgeon. Their Biological Opinion (BO) calls for flows at 10,000 cubic feet per second above the dam’s 25,000 cfs powerhouse capacity at least three times in 10 years.
The increased flows are controversial because they would exceed the state of Montana’s water-quality standards for gas saturation of the Kootenai River, negatively impacting other fish species in the river in order to help sturgeon.
