The STOKR bike ride is held each year on the second weekend in May. The event is sponsored by the Kootenai Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity.
"STOKR is all about raising money for Habitat for Humanity so we can build homes for those in need," said organizer Susie Rice. "Since last year's STOKR, over 270 volunteers have worked together to build house #6 in our area. The house was just dedicated on January 21, 2006."
This fun bike ride takes place over two days and has three ride choices. There are two rides on Saturday, a 45-mile short ride along the Kootenai River and a longer 98-mile loop ride from Libby, over Pipe Creek Pass in the Yaak and back to Libby. On Sunday, riders head the other direction along the Kootenai River on a 37-mile ride to Libby Dam and Lake Koocanusa. Both rides are very scenic and food stops are placed along the way. The pie stop is the all-time favorite on the 98-mile Saturday loop.
By May, spring has sprung in Libby and the snow is mostly gone. Days can be sunny or showery and a bit brisk, so riders are encouraged to dress for variable weather.
STOKR is limited to 350 riders. Registration forms should be returned with payment by April 29, 2006. “Be sure to get your entry form in early! Last year we filled on March 8!!” said Rice. After acceptance of the first 350 riders, additional entries will be placed on a waiting list in the order received and be contacted in case of a cancellation. Participants will be sent a confirmation letter including a list of accommodations and camping options once they are registered.
