Draft EIS for Montana Reservoir operations released
November 30, 2005
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation recently released a draft Environmental Impact Statement evaluating long-term implementation of alternative flood control and fish operations at Libby and Hungry Horse Dams in Montana.
The Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation are seeking public review on the draft EIS. Comments will be reviewed and incorporated in a final environmental impact statement scheduled for completion for early in 2006. The Corps and Reclamation will host seven public meetings to provide an opportunity for the public to present oral and/or written comments on the draft EIS.
The DEIS is the result of ongoing debates over management of the Federal Columbia River Power System dams and the protection of threatened or endangered fish species that inhabit the system waters, which are impacted by dam flow fluctuations.
The complete draft document is available online under "Upper Columbia Alternative Flood Control and Fish Operations" at http://www.usbr.gov/pn/programs/VARQ
