Libby Dam to increase flows
Precipitation forecasts indicate need to slow reservoir fill rate
June 12, 2005
The National Weather Service recently issued a precipitation and inflow forecast that shows the need to increase flows from Libby Dam to slow the rate of fill. Koocanusa Reservoir inflows have remained between 30 kcfs and 40 kcfs since June 1, causing elevation to increase from 2438.3’ MSL to 2448.9’ MSL as of June 11 (full pool is 2459’ MSL). Bonners Ferry stage elevation was 1752.42 as of June 11, with a flow of approximately 26.82 kcfs.
Libby Dam increased discharges late Friday afternoon (June 10) from 14 kcfs to 23.5 kcfs; discharge will remain at approximately 23.5 kcfs through the weekend. As of Friday afternoon the target flow for daylight hours next week (June 13-June 17) was approximately 19 kcfs, with evening flows ramping up to approximately 22 kcfs. There are currently electric transmission limitations with Hungry Horse Dam also generating power with high flows, which may influence our ability to maintain these higher discharges. Reservoir Control Center will be re-evaluating the precipitation and inflow forecasts daily, and will adjust plans as necessary.
