STOKR comments and pictures
May 10, 2005
More than 350 bicyclists turned out for the 11th annual Scenic Tour of the Kootenai River (STOKR) bike ride last Saturday and Sunday. Despite the cool and sometimes wet weather, enthusiasm was high for the event which filled up in early March. STOKR is held each year on the second weekend in May and is sponsored by the Kootenai Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity.
According to organizer Susie Rice, "It was another great weekend. It was actually a plus to have the weather move the food stop inside at the dam so people took advantage of viewing the exhibits and the live cam to the eagle's nest."
This year riders could order a special bike jersey for the 2005 STOKR. The jersey was designed by STOKR rider and graphic designer, Tyann Hemres from Troy. Susie Rice said there are still a few STOKR jerseys left if anyone still wants one. They currently have 19 jerseys left, men’s (8) & women’s (11), in various sizes available. Cost is $55 (e-mail Greg & Susie Rice if interested: gregrice@libby.org)
For those who like to plan ahead, STOKR 2006 will be May 13 & 14. Below are comments from riders about this year’s STOKR:
"Boy was I impressed with STOKR! It is a wonderful event for both Habitat and the community of Libby. The comments I heard from people both days were just incredible. As you probably already know the people who do it just love it. I can certainly see why you end up with a waiting list."
"What a wonderful weekend!"
"I'll start training much earlier this year."
”Great Event! The folks in Libby are some of the most friendly I have ever met...”
"The race, from packet-pickup to finish was great. It was well organized, well supported and the volunteers were awesome."
"Both the 98 mile ride, and the ride today were beautiful. I want to thank you guys, and all of the volunteers that spent there weekend helping everyone, and especially thank the employees at the libby dam for letting us get a birds eye view of the dam."
"The Pie stop was great, and the more food I saw the more I knew I had to ride harder in order to keep the calorie burn factor higher than the intake factor. I don't think that worked."
"Thank you, Susie, and Greg and all the terrific Libby folks who made it a great weekend for us. Everyone showed so much enthusiasm and excitement about the event. After the glorious scenery, I would say all the great people are one of the key reasons for STOKR's growth and popularity."
"Just completed the STOKR a few days back. First time but definitely not the last. You put on one of the nicest, most laid-back events that I've participated in. Thank you. I had a great time and you guys did a great job. See you next time."
