New waterproof licenses & tags for 2005

April 4, 2005
Bear and turkey hunters will be the first to notice Montana's new waterproof carcass tags when they purchase hunting licenses via Montana Fish, Wildlife & Park's Automated Licensing System (ALS) this spring. In response to requests to improve the size and durability of Montana's hunting and fishing licenses, FWP now uses a new, flexible water proof paper for all licenses purchased over-the-counter. New carcass tags are now available at all license providers.
Licenses or carcass tags for black bear, deer, elk, antelope, mountain lion and turkey also have new validation requirements. To properly validate a harvest, hunters must cut out two digits for the day of the kill--a 0, 1, 2,or 3 needs to be cut out for the first digit of the day of the kill and a 0 through 9 for the second digit. Validation of the month is similar to previous year's tags. To see an example of a properly validated tag, visit FWP's website at fwp.mt.gov.
Black Bear Hunting Spring black bear hunters are reminded that they need to purchase their licenses before April 14 if they intend to hunt during the spring black bear season. Black bear hunting licenses purchased after April 14 cannot be used until the fall black bear hunting season. Hunters may hold only one black bear license per license year. The spring black bear season opens April 15 and closes in May or June depending on the area. Black bear hunters are also required to have successfully completed a bear identification test before obtaining a Montana black bear hunting license. The identification program is intended to prevent mistaken killings of grizzly bears and to help Montana maintain its black bear hunting season. The test is available on the FWP web site under the Quick Access menu, or use keywords Bear Identification Program to search.
