Heritage Museum to open June 4
New displays and exhibits
April 4, 2005
The Heritage Museum in Libby will open for the summer season on Saturday, June 4. The Museum will be open 7 days a week during the season, closing on August 28th. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am- 5 pm and afternoons from 1-5 pm on Sundays. Admission is by free-will donation.
A new exhibit for the summer of 2005 is called 100 Years of the U.S. Forest Service - The Future of Our Past. The US Forest Service is celebrating its 100th year in 2005. Coordinated by USFS Archaelogist Becky Timmons, the project is part of partnership between the Forest Service, Provider Pals, the Montana Heritage Project and the Heritage Museum.
There is also a feature exhibit on the Libby Volunteer Fire Department including photo displays of various fires fought by the LVFD, an original fire wagon used by the LVFD with round-bottom buckets used before hoses, a display case with memorabilia, a roster of firefighters by year, and a memorial to Cory Clawson, a fire fighter killed in the line of duty.
The Museum also has a feature collection for the Double Mack Mining Company which operated from 1906-1943. The mining interests involved quartz lode mines for gold, silver and other precious metals in Lincoln County. The collection consists of contracts (1906-1931), naturalization records (1899-1935), notices of location/deeds (1898-1934), stock certificates (1901-1928), and correspondence (1892-1943).
New Exhibits coming to the Museum in 2006 The Smithsonian is coming to Libby! The traveling exhibition Key Ingredients: America by Food is commissioned to arrive in Montana in May 2006. It was announced at the Museums Association of Montana Annual Conference that The Heritage Museum has been chosen as one of six rural Montana museums and historical societies which will host the exhibit. The exact dates that it will be in Libby are still to be determined, but the museum board is hopeful that the requested dates during the summer can be accommodated.
The exhibit will focus on an important and favorite part of everyone’s life and heritage–food! Key Ingredients: America by Food demonstrates how food on the American table is rooted in culture, landscape, climate, tradition, technology, and entrepreneurship. It underscores the contributions made by Native American cultures to the American palate and eating habits. It explores sources and processes of production, systems of packaging and delivery, secrets of ingredients and preparations shared between peoples and across generations, and the rituals and traditions associated with the enjoyment of special menus and dishes.
Key Ingredients: America by Food is part of the Museum on Main Street program, a joint project of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Federation of State Humanities Councils, of which Montana Committee for the Humanities is a member. Major funding is provided by the Untied States Congress.
Public programs and community activities will play an integral part in the exhibit. A planning committee will meet this June to share ideas. Anyone with an interest in being part of the committee is asked to call Laurie Mari at the Heritage Museum, 406-293-7521.
