STOKR filled for May 7-8 bike ride
Scenic Tour of the Kootenai River
March 8, 2005
According to STOKR organizers Greg and Susie Rice, the available spots for this year’s Scenic Tour of the Kootenai River have now filled. A waiting list has been started, however only the first 35 applications will be accepted for this list. To get on the waiting list, mail your completed application to: STOKR, PO Box 19, Libby, MT 59923. (Please do not call us here at LibbyMT.com. We cannot answer questions or place people on the waiting list.)
The popular bike ride is held each year on the second weekend in May. It is sponsored by the Kootenai Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity. The ride is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 7-8, this year. Last year the rider application filled by April 15th. This year will be the 11th for the event, which has grown increasingly popular each year.
STOKR is not a race, but rather a leisurely ride along very scenic routes in the Libby area. Saturday offers two options, a 98-mile long and a shorter 45 mile route. Both start along the scenic Kootenai River. The longer route goes up into the Yaak country of the northwest corner of Montana and returns into Libby along Pipe Creek road. It is suggested that riders have at least one 50 mile ride, and at least 200 miles on their legs, before attempting this ride. The shorter route heads west alongside the Kootenai River stopping at Kootenai Falls, where the movie ‘The River Wild’ was filmed. Sundays ride takes bikers along a scenic 37-mile route following the Kootenai River upstream to Lake Koocanusa and the Visitor Center at Libby Dam.
