Grooming starts on X-C Ski Trails
Skiing is ‘Excellent’
January 2, 2005
Don’t let the lack of snow at Turner keep you from going out skiing! There is plenty of snow for cross-country skiing. Grooming has started on the designated ski trails and reports are that "the skiing is excellent".
Nearby South Flower Creek has 11 km of X-C ski trails that are groomed during the winter season. All trails have both a skating lane and classic tracks. On Saturday nights the South Flower trail is lighted for night skiing from 6 pm until 8:30 pm. The South Flower trail is located 4 miles southwest of Libby.
"There is a shelter with a fire, nice bathroom (and goodies on Saturday nights). A fun easy 1 km loop is lit (Shorty's loop on the map). The lit ski will be every Saturday night usually through the end of February," said ski enthusiast and Kootenai X-C Ski Club volunteer Greg Rice. He also noted that the South Flower Creek trail parking area has been enlarged to accommodate 30 cars.
Other groomed X-C ski trails near Libby include Bear Creek, 7 miles south of Libby, with almost 8 km of trails that are intermittently groomed and Timberlane Campground course, 9 miles north of Libby on the Pipe Creek road, with a little over 3 km of intermittently groomed trails. Timberlane also has a ski play hill and sledding opportunities, a picnic shelter, fire ring and provided firewood.
More information about area cross-country skiing is available on our X-C Ski Page and from the Kootenai National Forest website.
