Kootenai Highland Gathering
Friday Kickoff
July 21, 2022
The tenth annual Kootenai Highland Gathering kicked off Friday night, July 15, with a Meet & Greet, clan set-up, primitive games and assorted light-hearted contests throughout the evening. Saturday would see the Highland Games, sanctioned by the Scottish American Athletic Association (SAAA), which provides members to set up, run and judge the games. Caber toss, Braemar stone, weight over bar, weight for distance, sheaf toss, and hammer toss are the traditional Celtic highland games that entertain spectators. Besides the games, visitors also enjoy pipers, drummers, clans in traditional dress, music, food, and vendors.
Angie McLaury, of McLaury Apiaries in Libby, organized the first Highland Gathering in 2013, assisted by Tammy Blackburn and Dee Teske. The Gathering has grown in popularity through its ten years and is one of Libby's can't-miss summer events.
