Montana’s lone congressman, Rep. Ryan Zinke has been named by President-elect Donald Trump for the position of Secretary of the Interior in the new administration. Zinke, a Republican from Whitefish, Montana, recently won re-election to his second term in the Montana House. He is a fifth generation Montanan, former state senator and a 23-year U.S. Navy SEAL veteran.
If confirmed, this will leave a vacancy for the Montana House position. Montana Governor Steve Bullock will then have to schedule a special election to fill the position. The election will need to take place between 85 and 100 days from the date the office becomes vacant. Each political party will select a candidate and make a nomination at least 75 days before the special election date.
The United States Department of the Interior is responsible for management and conservation of most federal land and natural resources. It includes authority over the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Geological Survey, Bureau of Reclamation. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, and some others. About 75% of federal public land is managed by the department, with most of the remainder managed by the Agriculture Department’s U.S. Forest Service. The current Secretary of the Interior is Sally Jewell.
