It was a packed house Saturday at Libby Dam for two presentations by raptor biologist Janie Fink, director of the non-profit Birds of Prey Northwest, a raptor rehabilitation and education organization in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The presentations were hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Libby Dam Visitors Center.
Fink brought with her a Red-tailed Hawk, a Great Horned Owl, a Swainson's Hawk, a Peregrine Falcon and a Bald Eagle, all specimens that cannot be returned to the wild. She uses the birds to educate the public, especially children, about their fascinating biology and value for conservation efforts.
Birds of Prey Northwest was established in Idaho in 2003, and continues its efforts promoting stewardship and conservation of raptors and providing medical treatment and rehabilitation to injured birds of prey with the ultimate goal of returning them to the wild. Those that cannot be returned to the wild are used for educational purposes such as the presentations held at Libby Dam.
