Yarnell Island
Yarnell Island

Yarnell Island is located in the middle of Lake Koocanusa reservoir and is only accessible by boat. You can launch from any of the boat ramps in the area and paddle over to the island. At high water levels there are two islands, at low water levels there is just one island. Circumnavigate the islands, poking into all the nooks and crannies. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy this as a day visit or spend the night for an unforgettable experience having the island all to yourself. This is a very primitive, unique site. There are 8 picnic tables and fire rings on top of the island. There is no bathroom on the site.

Directions:
From Libby, cross the Kootenai River bridge on Hwy 37 and travel east towards Libby Dam. Yarnell Island is in Lake Koocanusa approximately 3 miles north of Libby Dam and is only accessible by boat. There are boat ramps on both sides of the reservoir, so you can take your pick which one you want to take off from. Boat ramps are located at many locations along the reservoir. The eight picnic tables and fire rings on the island are primitive sites.
